# Fable Documentation > Fable is the power editor for documents — a collaborative AI document editor where you say what should change, by typing or speaking, and the AI makes that exact edit, shows what it changed, and lets you undo it. A native desktop app for macOS and Windows, built for anyone who revises long documents, alone or with a team. --- ## Welcome to Fable Fable is a collaborative document editor for power editing. Instead of selecting text and rewriting it by hand, you say what should change, by typing or speaking, and an AI editor makes that change to your document in real time. It's not a chatbot or a prompt-and-generate tool. It's a real document editor where your words stay yours, and the AI is a careful editor that changes what you asked for, shows you what it did, and lets you take it back. ### Who Is It For? Fable is built for anyone who revises long documents — writers, lawyers, academics, technical writers, content teams, co-authors, and teams working on a document together. ### How It Works 1. Type what you want changed, or press record and say it 2. If you speak, Fable transcribes your voice locally on your machine 3. The AI edits your document based on your instruction 4. Changes stream in live — you can watch the edits appear 5. History is saved with a summary, explanation, and full diff If you speak an instruction, your audio never leaves your machine. Fable transcribes your voice locally using built-in speech recognition. Only the text of the instruction is sent to the server, along with the document. ### All Work Is Live Everything happens in the open. There are no local drafts that only you can see. No hidden changes that get merged later. When you make an edit, everyone sees it. The full history is always there. Nothing is ever lost. ### What Makes Fable Different - Plain-language instructions — type them or speak them - AI as editor, not author — the AI refines your writing instead of replacing it - All work is live — no local drafts, no hidden changes - Collaborative by default — built for teams working on the same document - Full accountability — every edit is attributed, explained, and reversible - Built-in quality checks — AI agents catch cross-document inconsistencies and can fact-check your writing Fable runs as a native desktop app on macOS and Windows. --- ## Getting Started ### Signing In Fable supports two ways to sign in: - Google — click "Sign in with Google" and authorize in your browser - Email & password — create an account with your email, a password, and a display name Your session persists across app restarts. ### Your First Project When you open Fable for the first time, you'll be guided through creating your first project. Pick an emoji icon and give it a title. Every project starts with one document. You can add more documents at any time. ### The Workspace Three panels: Left (projects & documents), Center (the editor), Right (edit history). Both sidebars can be collapsed for a focused writing view — press Cmd+Z (or Ctrl+Z on Windows) to toggle Zen mode. ### Making Your First Edit 1. Open a document 2. Click the record button or press Cmd+R 3. Say what you want — e.g., "Write the opening scene of a mystery set in Paris" 4. Click stop or press Cmd+R again 5. Watch your document come to life --- ## Voice Editing Voice editing is the heart of Fable. Press record, say what you want in plain language, and the AI makes it happen. ### How Voice Editing Works 1. Press record — click the record button or press Cmd+R (Ctrl+R on Windows) 2. Speak your instruction — there's no time limit 3. Fable transcribes locally — your voice is converted to text on your machine 4. The AI edits your document — changes stream in live 5. History is saved — every edit gets a summary, explanation, diff, and attribution ### What You Can Say - "Make the opening paragraph more dramatic" - "Add a scene where the characters arrive at the castle" - "Fix the dialogue in the third paragraph — it feels stiff" - "Change the tone to be more mysterious" - "Remove the last two paragraphs" - "Write the opening scene of a mystery novel set in 1920s Paris" The AI can edit existing text and generate new content from scratch. ### A Respectful AI Editor - Preserves your voice — matches your style, tone, and word choices - Makes targeted changes — only touches what you asked about - Never rewrites unless asked - Always explains itself — every edit comes with a clear explanation - Works with any kind of writing — fiction, non-fiction, scripts, notes, outlines, poetry ### Privacy Your audio never leaves your machine. Fable transcribes your voice locally using Whisper. Only the transcribed text and your document content are sent to the server. The AI only sees the current document and what you asked for. --- ## Working Together ### Real-Time Collaboration Work on the same document with your team at the same time. Everyone sees changes as they happen. The AI always works against the latest version of the document. ### Inviting Collaborators Invite people to your project by email. If they don't have a Fable account yet, the invitation is deferred — they'll automatically get access when they sign up. ### Roles and Permissions - Owner — full control: edit, manage collaborators, accept suggestions, manage billing - Editor — write, format, and use voice editing - Viewer — read the document and leave voice suggestions on specific passages Permissions are set at the project level. ### Inline Attribution Every edit shows who made it. Color-coded avatar icons appear in the edit history — each collaborator gets a unique color. Each document shows its list of contributors. ### Private Instructions When you give a voice instruction, only you can see what you said. Your collaborators see that you made an edit and what changed, but not your exact words to the AI. --- ## Projects & Documents ### How Projects Work - A project is a writing project — a novel, a screenplay, a game script - Each project has a title, an emoji icon, a list of collaborators, and one or more documents - A document is a single piece of writing — a chapter, a scene, a section Projects are what you share. When you invite collaborators, they get access to the entire project. ### Creating and Managing Documents - Create new documents with the + button or Cmd+N (Ctrl+N on Windows) - Rename documents by clicking the edit icon - Delete documents you no longer need - Reorder documents by dragging and dropping in the sidebar ### Archiving Projects Archive completed projects instead of deleting them. Archived projects can be recovered at any time. ### The Document Editor Supports: Bold, italic, headings (H1-H3), bullet and numbered lists, blockquotes, horizontal rules, word and character counts. Content is written in Markdown and rendered beautifully. --- ## Suggestions & AI Agents ### Viewer Suggestions Viewers can select a passage of text, press record, and speak their suggestion. Fable creates a suggestion card anchored to that passage. Owners can accept or reject suggestions. ### The Editor Agent Runs automatically after edits. Checks for cross-document consistency — character names, timelines, locations, plot points, world-building. Creates suggestions on affected documents if inconsistencies are found. Never modifies documents without permission. ### The Fact-Checker Triggered manually. Select text, and the fact-checker extracts factual claims, searches the web, and evaluates them. Creates suggestion cards with verdicts: verified, unverified, or contradicted, along with source links. --- ## Edit History ### The Timeline The right sidebar shows the complete history of every change — forever. This is the undo system. There's no separate undo button. ### What Each Entry Shows - A short summary of what changed - The AI's explanation of why it made those changes - A timestamp - Who made the edit (with their color-coded avatar) - A detailed diff showing exactly which paragraphs were added, changed, or removed ### Diff Visualization - Green — paragraphs that were added - Yellow — paragraphs that were modified - Red strikethrough — paragraphs that were removed ### Reverting Changes Click any point in the timeline to revert. Nothing is ever lost — even after reverting, the full history remains intact. --- ## Writing Tools ### Search Press Cmd+F (or Ctrl+F on Windows) to search across all your accessible projects and documents. Search is scoped to your account. ### Export Export in five formats: Markdown (.md), Plain text (.txt), Word document (.docx), PDF (.pdf), HTML (.html). Export a single document or all documents in a project at once. Files are saved locally. ### Keyboard Shortcuts | Mac | Windows | Action | |-----|---------|--------| | Cmd+F | Ctrl+F | Find in document | | Cmd+R | Ctrl+R | Start / stop recording | | Cmd+Z | Ctrl+Z | Zen mode (hide panels) | | Cmd+Shift+Z | Ctrl+Y | Redo | | Cmd+A | Ctrl+A | Select all | | Cmd+N | Ctrl+N | New document | | Cmd+, | Ctrl+, | Open settings | --- ## Settings & Appearance ### Settings Overview Seven settings pages: Profile, About, Appearance, Notifications, Hotkeys, Permissions, Billing. ### Themes - Inkwell (light) — warm cream backgrounds and deep indigo ink - Midnight (dark) — deep blue-ink backgrounds with warm gold accents Switch between light, dark, or system-matched in Settings > Appearance. Control per-event: collaborator editing, edit completed, new version, project invitation. ### Permissions Test and grant microphone access for voice recording. --- ## Billing & Credits ### How Credits Work Every AI operation uses credits. Each edit shows its cost for full transparency. ### Free Credits Every new account gets free credits — no credit card required. ### Pro Subscription Monthly credit allowance that resets each billing cycle. Subscription credits are consumed first. ### Top-Up Packs One-time purchases in multiple tiers. Top-up credits never expire and are consumed after subscription credits. ### Credit Meters Settings > Billing shows two separate progress bars: subscription credits and top-up credits. Meters change color when credits run low. ### Who Pays? All AI costs are charged to the project owner's credits. Editors and viewers don't need their own credits. --- ## Platforms - macOS (universal binary, signed and notarized) - Windows (NSIS installer) - Internet connection required for AI editing and document sync ## Contact - Website: https://www.fable.la - Email: hello@fable.la
