Introduction

At Fable, we take your privacy seriously. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our collaborative writing application ("Fable").

Voice Processing

When you give a voice instruction, the transcribed text of your instruction and your document content are sent to our servers, which forward them to the AI for editing. The AI providers we use do not keep your content after the edit is complete.

Document Data

Your documents are synced in real-time for collaboration purposes:

Document content is stored securely to enable real-time collaboration
Edit history is preserved for version control and attribution
Collaborators on a project can see its edit history, including the instruction behind each edit
Search happens on your device, so your searches stay with you. To keep search fast, the desktop app saves a search index on your computer that does not contain your document text
When you open a project in the desktop app, a copy of its documents is saved as Markdown files in the ~/Fable folder on your computer so the assistant can read them

In-App Feedback

Fable includes a built-in feedback chat where you can report bugs, request features, or ask questions using voice recordings or text:

Voice feedback is transcribed locally on your device. The transcribed text is sent to our servers for light copy-editing (grammar cleanup) using an AI model, then stored in your feedback thread.
You may attach screenshots to feedback messages. These images are stored securely in our cloud storage and are accessible only through our server.
All feedback message content is encrypted at rest. The Fable team can view your feedback messages and screenshots in order to respond to your requests.
Feedback threads are retained as long as your account is active. You can request deletion of your feedback history by contacting us.

Information We May Collect

The following information may be collected:

Account Information: Email address and profile details for collaboration features
Usage Statistics: Application events and masked session recordings linked to your account, collected while you use Fable, to improve it
AI Usage: Processing usage for billing purposes

Usage Analytics

We use PostHog to understand how Fable is used and to improve it:

Usage events are linked to your account, and your analytics profile includes your email address, name, and profile picture.
Session recordings show how people move through the app and website. All text on screen and everything you type is masked before a recording leaves your device, and recordings are kept for 30 days.
For AI features we record usage details such as the model, token counts, cost, and timing, without your prompts or the AI's responses.
When an error occurs, our error-reporting service (Sentry) keeps a short, masked recording of the moments before it.

Usage analytics and masked session recordings are collected while you use Fable. You can ask us to delete your data by emailing hello@fable.la. On our website we also use Google Analytics and the Meta Pixel; see our Cookie Policy.

Third-Party Services

Fable connects to AI services for voice editing and related features such as summaries, suggestions, and the assistant. AI requests go through OpenRouter, which is configured to use zero-data-retention providers. When you use the assistant (Ask), it sends the AI the context it needs to answer, such as document titles and summaries, recent project activity, and the text of documents it reads.

We also use the following service providers to run Fable:

Google Cloud / Firebase: accounts, document storage, file storage, and encryption key management
Heroku and Upstash: hosting for our servers and background job queue
Vercel: hosting for the fable.la website
Exa: web searches for the AI editor, assistant, and fact-checker
fal.ai and OpenAI: image and video generation
PostHog (United States): usage analytics and session recordings
Mixpanel: usage analytics, which we are replacing with PostHog
Sentry and New Relic: error reports and performance monitoring
Resend: invitation and notification emails
LemonSqueezy: payments and subscriptions (we don't see your card details)
Google Analytics and Meta: website analytics and advertising measurement

Data Retention

Document data is retained as long as your account is active. You can delete individual documents at any time, and you can ask us to delete your entire account by emailing hello@fable.la; we complete account deletion within 30 days. Usage analytics are kept while your account is active and deleted with it, and session recordings are kept for 30 days. Copies in the ~/Fable folder on your computer stay there until you delete them.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date.
