Word to Markdown Converter

Turn a Word document into clean Markdown. Heading styles become Markdown headings, and lists, links, bold, italics and tables carry over. Everything runs in your browser, so your document never leaves your device.

How it works

  1. Drop a Word document (.docx) onto the box above, or choose one from your computer.
  2. Your browser opens the document and maps its structure to Markdown: Heading 1 to Heading 6 styles become headings, bulleted and numbered lists become Markdown lists, and tables become Markdown tables.
  3. Review the result in the Markdown or Preview tab, then copy it or download it as a .md file.

Private by design: your file is converted on your device and is never uploaded. The conversion runs inside this browser tab with no server step, and your file isn't saved anywhere. Close the tab and it's gone.

Limitations

  • Only .docx files are supported. For an older .doc file, open it in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice and save it as .docx first.
  • Images, comments, tracked changes, headers, footers and footnotes are left out.
  • Headings come from Word’s heading styles. Text that is only formatted to look like a heading (large and bold) comes out as a bold paragraph.
  • Merged table cells are not kept, and a cell with several paragraphs is joined into one line, because Markdown tables hold one line per cell.
  • Fonts, colors and page layout have no Markdown equivalent, so they are dropped.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a Word document to Markdown?
Drop the .docx file onto the converter above. The Markdown appears right away; copy it or download it as a .md file.
Is my Word document uploaded?
No. The document is opened and converted inside this browser tab on your device. It is never sent to a server and it is not saved anywhere.
Can I convert a Google Doc to Markdown?
Yes. In Google Docs, choose File, then Download, then Microsoft Word (.docx), and drop the downloaded file here.
Does it keep tables?
Yes. Word tables become Markdown tables (the GitHub-flavored kind most apps support), with the first row as the header row.
Is it free?
Yes. No sign-up, no file limit and no watermark.
