To write a report with AI, start from your sources rather than a blank prompt: gather the notes and data, ask questions across them to find what matters, then let an AI report writer draft the report and revise it with your team. A report is only as good as the facts underneath it. AI is good at turning facts into a clear structure; it cannot supply the facts for you.

A Report Structure That Works

  • Executive summary: the conclusion and the main recommendation, in a few sentences
  • Background: why the report exists and what it covers
  • Findings: what you found, with the evidence
  • Analysis: what the findings mean
  • Recommendations: what should happen next, by whom
  • Appendix: methods, data tables, sources

Writing a Report with AI in Fable

1. Put the sources in one project

Import the material the report is based on: weekly updates, meeting notes, interview write-ups, last quarter's report. Word, PDF, Markdown and text files each become a document in the project, with headings and tables kept. See import and export.

2. Ask before you write

Use the project assistant to find the findings: "What were the three biggest causes of delay across these updates?" or "Which customer complaints come up in more than one interview?" It answers from the documents in the project and names the ones it drew on, so you can check them.

3. Draft the report

Ask the assistant to write the report as a new document ("Draft a quarterly operations report with an executive summary, findings, and three recommendations, based on these updates"), and approve the proposal to create it. Or open a blank document and type or speak the instruction yourself.

4. Revise section by section

Short, specific instructions work best: "cut the background to one paragraph," "turn the findings into a table with impact and owner columns," "rewrite the summary for the leadership team, no jargon." Each edit shows what changed. See editing with AI.

5. Review with colleagues and export

Invite reviewers as Viewers so they can leave typed or spoken suggestions on specific passages, which you accept or reject. Every change is saved in the version history. Export to PDF to send, or DOCX if someone will lay it out in Word.

Tips for Clearer Reports, With or Without AI

  • Lead with the answer. Most readers stop after the summary; make sure it says what to do.
  • One finding per paragraph. It makes the report easier to skim and to edit.
  • Check every number against its source. Treat AI-written figures as unverified until you have.
  • Name owners in recommendations. "Improve onboarding" is a wish; "Support lead revises the onboarding guide by March" is a plan.
  • Cut the method to the appendix. Keep it, but out of the way.

When to Use Which Tool

Dashboards and business intelligence tools are the right place for live numbers and charts. Fable is for the written report around them: the narrative, findings, recommendations and the review that gets it right. If your reports follow a regular cycle, keep each one in the same project, so the assistant can compare this quarter with the last. Frequently Asked Questions

Can AI write a report for me?

AI can draft a report from your source material: notes, updates, survey comments, previous reports. It is fast at structure, summaries and plain language. You still need to supply the facts, check every figure, and decide what the recommendations should be.

What is the best way to use an AI report writer?

Start with your sources, not a blank prompt. Ask questions across the material first to find the findings, then have the AI draft the report from them, then revise section by section and have colleagues review it before it goes out.

Can Fable create charts for my report?

No. Fable works on the text of the report: drafting, editing, tables and structure. Make charts in your spreadsheet or analytics tool, and add them when you lay out the final version.

How do I stop AI from changing my numbers?

Say so in the instruction ("do not change any figures or dates"), keep figures in tables where they are easy to check, and review the diff of every edit. In Fable, each edit is saved with a diff in the version history, so a changed number is easy to spot and restore.
