The sun rose over the city. People walked to work. It was a normal day.
How Editing Works
Editing with AI is the heart of Fable. Instead of selecting text and rewriting it by hand, you say what should change in plain language, and the AI makes that edit to your document.
Give an instruction
The AI edits your document
Review what changed
Keep it or undo it
Typing an Instruction
The instruction box sits in the bar above the editor. Press Cmd+K (Ctrl+K on Windows) to jump to it, type what should change, and press Enter to send. Press Esc to clear the box. The bar shows example instructions underneath if you need ideas.
Speaking an Instruction
Prefer to talk? Click the mic button or press Cmd+R (Ctrl+R on Windows) to start recording, say what you want, and press it again to stop. While you record, an animated indicator shows that Fable is listening. Recordings can run up to five minutes, with a countdown near the end.
After you stop, Fable transcribes your instruction on your computer and sends the text to the AI, the same way as a typed instruction.
What You Can Ask For
You can give any kind of instruction โ from small tweaks to sweeping changes:
- "Make the opening paragraph more direct"
- "Change Thompson to Richards throughout"
- "Turn the list of risks into a table"
- "Tighten the dialogue in the third paragraph โ it feels stiff"
- "Remove the last two paragraphs"
- "Write a one-page summary at the top"
The AI can edit existing text and write new content. Open a blank document and describe what you want, and the AI will draft it. But the real strength is in editing and refining what you already have.
A Careful AI Editor
Fable's AI is designed to be a careful editor, not a ghostwriter:
- Preserves your style โ it matches your tone and word choices
- Makes targeted changes โ it only touches what you asked about
- Never rewrites unless asked โ it won't restructure your whole document uninvited
- Always explains itself โ every edit comes with a clear explanation
- Works with any kind of document โ reports, proposals, papers, scripts, notes, fiction
Review and Undo
Every edit lands in the edit history with a summary, a diff and its author. If an edit isn't what you wanted, revert to the version before it. Nothing is ever lost, even after a revert.
Privacy
If you speak, your audio stays on your machine. Fable transcribes your voice on your computer. Only the text of your instruction and your document are sent to the server for AI processing.
When you give an edit instruction, the AI works on the current document. To ask questions across every document in a project, use the project assistant.
