Settings & Appearance

Customize your Fable experience. Manage your profile, choose a theme, configure notifications, and adjust permissions.

Settings Overview

Open Settings from the sidebar icon (or press Cmd+, / Ctrl+,). You'll find seven pages:

  • Profile — manage your display name and account details
  • About — app version and info
  • Appearance — choose your theme
  • Notifications — control what alerts you receive
  • Hotkeys — view all keyboard shortcuts
  • Permissions — test and grant microphone access
  • Billing — view your credits and subscription (see Billing & Credits)

Themes & Appearance

Fable ships with two beautiful themes designed for long writing sessions:

  • Inkwell (light) — warm cream backgrounds and deep indigo ink. Feels like writing on parchment with a fountain pen. Soft, organic, and easy on the eyes.
  • Midnight (dark) — deep blue-ink backgrounds with warm gold accents. Feels like writing by candlelight. Rich and immersive for late-night sessions.

You can switch between light, dark, or system-matched in Settings > Appearance. The editor uses Lora, a literary serif font, while the rest of the interface uses Inter for clean readability.

Notifications

Fable has two layers of notifications:

  • In-app toasts — real-time feedback inside Fable for recording state, edit completion, and errors
  • Desktop notifications — native OS notifications for collaboration events

In Settings > Notifications, you can control which events trigger notifications:

  • Collaborator editing — someone starts editing a document you're working on
  • Edit completed — AI finishes applying changes
  • New version — a collaborator creates a new version of a shared document
  • Project invitation — someone invites you to collaborate

A master toggle lets you turn desktop notifications on or off entirely. Notification preferences are stored in your account and persist across sessions.

Permissions

Since voice editing requires microphone access, the Permissions settings page lets you test your microphone and grant access if needed. If you're having trouble recording, this is the first place to check.
